Colors, Opposites, and Attraction/Repulsion

This was a fairly complicated assignment, not least because it is about colors and I was born with a red-green color deficiency (commonly known as colorblindness). Here's what I came up with.

One part of the assignment was to change the colors of a familiar object, hence we have a psychedelic sunset.

Another part of the assignment was to explore "Opposites" without using well-worn symbols. I really wanted to contrast the Artist and the Engineer as at least being on opposite ends of a spectrum in their common stereotypes. Part of the reason I wanted to do this is that I think many photographers (myself included) have a foot in each camp. Yes, I can geek out on gear and technique, and I love to make my own light modifiers. However, I do kinda care--a lot--about how things look, and I at least imagine that I'm creative. Anyhow, all that explanation is just so you know that I'm not so shallow that I'm just trying to depict the opposites of digital and analogue.

Engineer's watch (features, features, features... looks?)

Artist's watch (funky, chunky, and cool.... and analogue)

Another part of the assignment had to do with taking photos involving colors that we liked, and were attracted to, and those we were repulsed by. I found it difficult to be repulsed by colors. Especially all by themselves. Here's what I came up with, however:

Colors and Opposites by Celia Flinn

1. Attractive:

Turquoise / Primary Colors

2. Distasteful

 Pea green / yellow

Opposites: Juxtaposing Beauty and Decay

Colors

I love red. I am drawn to yellows and bright colors. Blues are calming.
I was at the Food Coop and saw a picture of a sunflower on the wall. I loved it. I wanted to replicate it. This picture is not the same, but similar. The sunflower is faded, the last of the summers crop. It is cheerful and bright.

I remembered seeing a collage of pictures. The same picture in different colors. How does it make me feel? Do I like it? Can you improve upon the creation? Does one color or image draw us more than others? Why? Does the whole improve the individual pictures or do the individual pictures improve the whole? Which do you like and why?

All these pictures remind of fall. The hot chocolate, the rain on the plants and my little nephew sleeping and wearing a warm sweater=] The only editing I used to clean these up was sharpening.

Seven Deadly Sins in Faces

I decided to try and use the power of expression in the human face (primarily) to communicate the Seven Deadly Sins, which was our assignment for this week. The sins are Greed, Gluttony, Lust, Sloth, Anger, Envy, and Pride.

Huge thanks and props are due to the volunteer talent from U of I that I worked with. And to Nellie Dimeler kindly helped me get connected with them and contributed her talent as well. I thought they all did a tremendous job! It was very difficult to choose just seven images for this post. When you're done identifying the sins in the comments you can click over to my web site gallery with the rest of the images.

But first you should help me with the final stage of this experiment as you tell me which photo corresponds to which sin. Thanks!
